CleanMark - Chemical Resistant Label Example
In late 2022, our customer was to upgrade from paper labels to hand-writable cleanroom materials with permanent markers. Additionally, the customer required chemical and smear resistance post-cleaning with disinfectants, including Sporklenze and isopropyl alcohol (IPA). The difficulty of the challenge is centered around the fact that IPA solubilizes the permanent market, thus requiring a coating that could overcome this barrier. Through several iterations of testing, we identified a UV satin coat solution that offered good resistance to both pre-printed templates and handwritten content resistance post IPA and Sporklenze spray and wiping.
Design considerations

In creating chemical-resistant labels that will function for their entire lifecycle, choosing the correct combination of raw face stock materials, coatings, and adhesives is imperative.   5. How does each of these face stock materials compare to each other?

      • PET is ideal against weathering and moisture because of its high tear and peel strength, smear resistance, and unreactive nature to many chemical reactions.

      • Vinyl functions best for curved surfaces that require strong adhesion. However, it is not the most resistive option in extreme environments so additional overlaminates may be required for protection. 

      • Polyethylene is a cost-effective alternative to PET and vinyl, but finding the appropriate adhesive can be challenging due to its low surface energy. 

      • Polyimide is a high-performance polymer that resists heat. It is a popular material for electronic labels due to its resistance to chemicals and current-induced heat. 

      • BOPP provides adequate strength against tearing while allowing optical transparency in the label. 

  6. Can I mark or write on waterproof chemical-resistant labels?

      • Yes, you can write with fine-tip permanent markers. 

  7. How is chemical resistance determined? 

      • Please refer to the ASTM D543 test for more details on the procedures used to assess plastic materials' resistance to various chemical reagents.

  8. Why did my label fall off after being splashed with my solvent?

      • In addition to the face stock material needing adequate resistance, the adhesive must also be resistant to possible dissolution or degradation when exposed to harsh solvents.
