Thermal Transfer Cleanroom Labels

Cleanroom thermal transfer labels utilize thermochromic ribbons to produce labels designed for critical environments where thermal transfer printers are used to print high resolution labels to identify and track information for extensive periods of time. Our label face stocks exhibit superior durability and performance in most cleanroom settings. Additionally, our thermal transfer labels are excellent for chemical resistance, waterproofing, and resistance to extreme temperature ranges.

Thermal Transfer Cleanroom Label Options

Cleanroom + Sterile

Labels manufactured with synthetic materials, processed in a Class 100 cleanroom and sterilized to prevent contamination from harming patients, research and products.

Cold Storage

Labels designed for use in cold storage applications can withstand exposure to ultra low temperatures and moisture so that they remain in place and legible.

Chemical Resistance

Labels engineered with durable materials can withstand direct exposure and immersion to harsh industrial chemicals and solvents so that they remain in place and legible.

Autoclave

Labels designed for use in autoclave devices can withstand high temperatures, moisture and pressure so that they remain in place and legible when exposed to sterilization.

Gamma

Labels manufactured with radiation sensitive material that changes color from yellow to red when exposed to gamma irradiation to help identify products that have been sterilized.

EtO

EtO sterilization process indicators are EtO sensitive labels which undergo a significant color change from purple to green upon exposure to ethylene oxide concentration of 450 mg/L.

Advantages & Limitations Of Thermal Transfer Cleanroom Labels

Advantages

  • Can print in full array of colors
  • Superior print quality of images and barcodes
  • Long term resistance to abrasion, moisture, sunlight, harsh chemicals, and extreme temperatures.
  • Waterproof
  • Fast printing speeds
  • Longer printhead life than direct thermal

Limitations

  • Ribbons are subject to wrinkling, compromising print quality
  • The need to be changed periodically
  • Typically high print cost
  • Potential for more mechanical failures
  • Environmentally less economical

Thermal Transfer vs. Direct Thermal Cleanroom Label Considerations

When choosing between the two label archetypes, the number one factor to weigh when choosing which label type to deploy is life expectancy. For labels that require life spans beyond 3-6 months, then thermal transfer is recommended to be selected by default. However, for short term application, other considerations below can then be considered.

  • Price per printed label ─ Thermal transfer labels typically cost less to print vs. direct thermal,  but accrue greater operational and maintenance costs at high volume.

  • Wear and tear of the printhead ─ Thermal transfer labels undergo far less friction and are less susceptible to contamination in relation to direct thermal printing, resulting in much longer lasting printhead life.

  • SKU count and Inventory ─ Thermal transfer labels may have numerous SKUs compared to direct thermal transfer due to the extensive option available for thermal transfer labels. This may complicate inventory requirements for procurement, shipping, tracking and storage.

  • Maintenance and downtime ─ Thermal transfer label printers have longer expenses pertaining to maintenance because ribbon management is required. As such, thermal transfer printers tend to have significant downtime vs direct thermal printers.

  • Environmental Impact ─ Thermal transfer labels can generate considerable waste and higher carbon footprints relative to direct thermal labels.
